You might think that boston terrier training is a simple task, but if you haven’t yet tried to teach your dog, you have no idea what you are getting yourself into. Teaching your terrier is a time consuming effort that doesn’t only last through his puppyhood, but for his entire life. Just like all the other aspects related to owning a canine, educating your pet is a serious commitment.

That said, while you can learn the step-by-step methods for boston terrier training from a professional trainer or a book, the following are the things you will not want to include in your lessons if you want your pooch to successfully learn a command.

Don’t…

• Become angry or frustrated with your terrier dog. Though it is easy to shout or lose your patience when he doesn’t listen to you or becomes disinterested, reprimanding your pal is giving him the wrong idea. Your goal is to help him understand what you want from him, not scare or bore him. You need patience and you need to take it slow and let your boston learn at his pace, not yours.

• Make lessons long. Your boston terrier training must be kept short because dogs have very poor attention spans, especially when they are puppies. Your sessions should be no longer than 5-10 minutes. This doesn’t mean that you can only instruct him for a maximum of ten minutes per day; it simply means you need to take sufficient breaks.

• Confuse your dog. Stick to one method of teaching and make certain the rest of your family members follow suit. Ensure everyone uses the same steps and the same hand signals. The more familiar something is the easier it is to understand.

• Train him just anywhere. Canines can be distracted by anything. Smells, sights, sounds and tastes are all extremely exciting to terriers. Therefore, when you are beginning boston terrier training (particularly a new instruction), if not done in a proper class, choose an area of your home that is quiet and void of anything that is too tempting.

• Forget to praise every time. Every time your pup follows through with a command, praise and reward him with attention, affection and/or a small treat. All he wants to do is please you, and the more he knows he is accomplishing this, the faster he will learn, listen and remember.

Finally, don’t forget that boston terrier training doesn’t end once you have taught him everything you want him to learn. All that is gained must be kept fresh. Test him with what he has learned on a daily basis and you’ll be pleased with his obedience and he’ll be happy to please you.

Boston terrier puppies bite, a trait not uncommon in most breeds. A biting puppy is quite normal because this is how he communicated with his fellow litter mates. Furthermore, he tends to gain many of his experiences through taste, so his mouth is liberally used most of the time.

Nevertheless, even though boston terrier puppies may have become accustom to using their mouth, you need to make it clear to your canine that you are the leader of his pack. This means your body, clothes and other belongings are off limits. Teaching your pet not to bite is not as difficult as you might think and it’s a lesson they need to learn. After all, biting is certainly not something you want your terrier to continue when he’s full grown.

The following are some tips you can put into practice to deter your pup from his chomping habit.

Tip 1 – When boston terrier puppies nip at your skin produce a sharp cry. The more you can make this sound like a high pitched yelp the more he should respond to it. Yelping is what his other four-legged brothers and sisters would do, so it is more likely to work to your advantage as he is more apt to respond on instinct.

Tip 2 – If making an injured noise doesn’t work, another good idea is to take hold of his muzzle and close your hand around his mouth gently applying pressure. In a firm voice tell him “no”. Repeat this every time he does it, holding his snout closed for a longer period each time. Be sure to praise him when he licks you instead of using his teeth to help him understand that this is acceptable while biting is not.

Tip 3 – Boston puppies love attention and they love to play, by ignoring him and taking away this special time you’ll get his attention. If your little one starts to get nippy and you’ve followd tip 2 but he hasn’t got the message, cease all interaction with him to make it clear you aren’t playing with him if he’s going to be a biter.

Remember, though you want to stop boston terrier puppies from biting, chewing is a natural habit, especially during teething, so you need to provide your pooch with plenty of acceptable things to chew on.

Puppies are not for everyone, which is why a boston terrier rescue can be a wonderful place to obtain a dog if this is the type of breed you would like as a pet. Some people are afraid to adopt a canine from rescues because they are worried that if the animal they receive was abused by their previous owner that the pooch will not be able to adjust or will be out of control. Although a valid concern, in the vast majority of cases it is not something you have to worry about.

You see, there are many benefits that come with adopting from a boston terrier rescue. Here are some of the positives that you might find quite appealing and may help dispel any myths, assumptions or worries you might have regarding these volunteer shelters:

• Rescuing is not a job it is a choice. Almost all rescues are run by volunteers; people who choose to save and care for terriers out of the goodness of their heart, with the only reward being to see downtrodden or abandoned dogs gain another chance of belonging to a loving family. Thus, usually their whole purpose is to help a pooch of any age find a new and permanent home, not to put him through more suffering or pocket money.

• Evaluation prior to placement. Although someone may wish to adopt from a boston terrier rescue and even if they are eligible, this doesn’t mean their request will be granted. Bostons are not handed over on a first-come-first-serve basis. A rescuer will want to make certain that your lifestyle is compatible with the characteristics of a particular pooch. This is truly wonderful because you will know that the terrier dog you eventually adopt is the right fit for you and your family. This can never be guaranteed with a puppy.

• Pre-puppy trained. Rescue dogs typically come pre-trained and without unwanted puppy traits, such as chewing or house accidents. Although you will likely need to teach further commands, not having to go through house training or worrying about losing your furniture or wardrobe to teething, makes a huge difference.

• No surprises. Adult dogs bond quickly with their new owners and easily settle into their pack. Since you will probably have already interacted with him at the boston terrier rescue before hand, it is unlikely that he’ll be under extreme stress, nor should he display any behaviors that have not already been brought to your attention.

Last but not least, with a boston terrier rescue you will be receiving an immediate companion that you can take with you wherever you go. Puppies require special care, training and attention, which limits the length and time they can be out and you can be away from them. It also restricts the places they can travel. Thus, you might just find that rescues can provide you with the ideal pal you’ve been waiting for.

Your kids want a boston terrier puppy and – hopefully after much deliberation and not simply because you gave in or agreed on a whim – you’ve decide to welcome a dog into your family. However, before you make any assumptions on what your home life is going to be like once you add a dog into the mix, make sure you and your children are prepared before he lives with you.

First things first, you need to understand that owning a dog is a commitment that lasts throughout his whole lifespan, and that you, not your children, are the primary caregiver of the boston terrier puppy. Sure your kid will promise to look after their pet, but it’s only a matter of time before you are the one left caring for their four-legged friend. The pooch is your responsibility. If you are not up for this task, you are not ready to be an owner.

Secondly, find out everything there is to know about this breed and make sure that your children learn with you. They need to realize that owning a terrier isn’t about playing or paying attention to the animal when it suits them, but it is also a lot of work. Explain to them:

How many times per day he needs to be fed

The number of times he needs to be walked in a day

How often he must be groomed and why this is important

What makes him excitable and how to effectively ignore/reprimand him

Why teaching a boston terrier puppy rules is necessary and why it is essential these regulations are followed.

If you think you child is old enough for a pet then he or she should be able to handle some responsibilities.

Thirdly, it is important that everyone comprehends that boston terrier dogs are not human and they do not think the same way we do. For instance, if a pup does something we don’t like (I.E. chews furniture, toys or clothing) he is teething or are looking for attention; he is not purposely intending to destroy something to upset you. Kids need to be told to pick up after themselves and not to blame or physically harm a dog when he does something that angers them.

Finally, children need to learn that just as they require and want their own privacy and space, so does the boston terrier puppy. When puppies are eating or having quiet time in their crate, teach your son or daughter to leave the terrier alone. This will help you to avoid any unwanted incidences and assist in establishing a strong bond of respect and friendship between the kids and canine.

Boston terrier information is what you need to look into if you are interested in obtaining this non-sporting breed or would like to learn more about it. There is much to discover about these little muscular dogs, some of which you may find surprising. For instance, are you aware that this particular canine snores, sheds and is very sensitive to hot and cold temperatures?

Knowing everything there is to know about a canine is important if you intend on making it a family pet because this isn’t a one-year commitment, you can expect to devote at least a full decade of your life to this pooch. Therefore, before you conduct a more thorough investigation on the history and characteristics that make up this pooch, the following is some basic boston terrier information you might find useful for starting you on your path of discovery:

Size – The boston terrier is a relatively small but compact dog that is well-muscled. They stand between 15-17 inches high and weigh 10 – 25 pounds.

Appearance – They have a very distinct face that is short with a square wide muzzle. They have large dark round eyes, erect ears, a black nose and a head that is broad and flat without wrinkles. Their neck is slightly arched, chest broad and have straight muscular legs. Their hair is short and glossy and has a fine texture. The coat colors include black and white, brindle and white and sometimes even brown and white.

Temperament – What you will find when looking through boston terrier information is that most sources will tell you they are highly alert, intelligent, enthusiastic and well-mannered dogs. Though they can have high energy at times they are gentle souls. In addition, he makes an affectionate and loyal companion and is typically friendly towards people, dogs and other non-canine pets.

Training – Though a smart pooch and a quick learner, the boston can be willful and requires dominance training to certify his place in the pack. He is also sometimes difficult to housebreak.

Exercise – These little terriers can live happily in an apartment and do not need a large yard to run around in. They are quite active indoors but still require daily walks (I.E. two daily 15 minute walks) and play time.

Health – Boston terrier information regarding their health can be somewhat shocking. That is because this little guy is prone to many hereditary illnesses, some of which is the result of poor breeding. Moreover, because of their flat nose they can have breathing problems and are also highly susceptible to heatstroke and hypothermia and should be protected from extreme weather conditions.

Life span – The average boston can live for up to 15 years.

There is much for you to learn so seek out as much boston terrier information as you can find. Learning also means speaking to vets, breeders, owners and actually spending time with the breed. Only after you have immersed yourself in this boston-dog-world will you be ready for the real thing.

The boston terrier dog is a small breed that is highly intelligent, enthusiastic, gentle and very alert. He is an American favorite that was actually developed in the city of Boston and is a small canine that has plenty of character and charisma. He can be a wonderful family pet, is particularly fond of seniors and has a distinct cuteness. However, though a wonderful pooch, he’s not always the ideal choice for a newbie or experienced dog owner.

Why? All dogs are different and though one breed may be compatible for your lifestyle, this may not be true for someone else and vice versa. Therefore, the best way to find out if the boston terrier dog is for you is to ask yourself a few questions, such as:

• Do I want a small dog I can carry around and will sit in my lap? If so, this terrier isn’t what you have in mind because though he is small in size, he is very muscular, sturdy and active. He is not a delicate lapdog.

• Do I want a non-shedder? This pooch regularly sheds his coat and will leave little hairs around your home wherever he goes.

• Do I want a guard for my home? The boston terrier dog is very friendly towards strangers and likely will not stop anyone from entering your residents. At best they are a watchdog and usually will alert you to noise or someone’s approach.

• How many dog-related noises and smells can I tolerate? Due to their flat noses, Boston’s snore, snort, snuff, and wheeze. They also tend to pass gas frequently and are prone to drooling.

• Do I want a dog that is easy to train? Boston terrier dogs are fast learners, but they can be stubborn and are also difficult to housebreak. Some – especially those bred by inexperienced and disreputable breeders – have neurotic behaviors and can be difficult to control.

These are just a few of the facts about the boston terrier dog you need to consider. Understand, finding out the not-so-pleasing qualities about a breed isn’t meant to deter you from choosing it, the purpose is to warn you that with the good comes the bad and no two terriers are alike. You will experience fewer negative surprises when you know exactly what you are facing.
